T-Bones Win Second Straight Series With 6-4 Victory

08/10/2003 9:34 AM - Chad Shindle’s RBI double to fight field scored Rodney Clifton with the go-ahead run to give the T-Bones a 6-4 victory over the Sioux City Explorers Sunday evening in Kansas City.

Shindle, who ended up going two-for-four with a run scored on the day, was not even supposed to start this game. An injury on the first play of the game to Ray Brown forced Al Gallagher to come up with a replacement. That replacement would be Shindle, who saw his first action at first base all season.

The T-Bones jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first two innings off of Sioux City starter Ralph McCasland. McCasland, who entered the game having surrendered only one earned run in over eleven innings to Kansas City, matched that total in the first inning. Eddie Pearson doubled to right field to score Skip Adams and make the score 1-0. Singles by Bao Vinh and Taber Maier in the second inning gave the T-Bones a three run lead.

T-Bones starter Jon McDonald cruised through the first four innings, allowing only three hits. He ran into trouble in the fifth, however. A RBI single to Jose Malave cut Kansas City’s lead to 3-2 and chased McDonald from the game. Mike Hoyt came on in relief and immediately surrendered a two run double to John Cotton that gave Sioux City a 4-3 advantage.

After Kansas City tied the game on an RBI ground out by Bruce Nelson in the sixth, Bryan Felkel came in the game in the seventh and quickly found trouble. In his two batters faced, Felkel only managed to throw one strike and was removed without recording an out. Jason Davis (3-1) then came in and got out of the tough situation by getting a ground out and two strikeouts to end the threat and keep the score tied. Davis would pitch a scoreless eighth inning as well to record his third win of the year.

Another offensive star for the T-Bones was shortstop Jack Jones. Jones had a perfect day at the plate by going three-for-three with an RBI. He also played effective team baseball by sacrificing the eventual tying run to third base in the sixth inning. His RBI single off of Jordan Romero (2-3) in the eighth inning capped the scoring on the evening for the T-Bones and made the score 6-4. Romero allowed both runs in the inning to take his third loss of the season.

D.J. Johnson came on in the ninth inning to record his fourteenth save. He got Mike Figga to pop out to second base to give the T-Bones their second straight series victory. They look to continue their hot streak as the homestand continues tomorrow night with the Sioux Falls Canaries in town for four games.
