08/11/2006 10:12 PM - KANSAS CITY The Kansas City T-Bones (37-39, 15-13) snuck past the Winnipeg Goldeyes (39-36, 12-15) by a 3-2 count, much to the delight of 6,336 fans Friday evening at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
It took some time for the T-Bones to figure out Winnipeg starter Glenn Bott, but it finally happened in the fourth inning. Kansas Citys first hit of the game came on a double by Greg Jacobs. Two batters later, a single to right field by Darryl Lawhorn would allow Jacobs to score from third. Chad Sosebees double advanced Lawhorn to third, but a groundout by Jaime Jones ended the inning with the T-Bones leading 1-0.
Kansas City struck again in the fifth, scoring a run on two hits to take a 2-0 lead. Robbie Knapp led off the inning with a single that dropped in front of centerfielder Fehlandt Lentini. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Norman, Knapp scored on J.D. Fousts first hit of the game, a single that snuck between the first and second basemen that gave the T-Bones the two run advantage.
The Goldeyes scored their first run in the sixth as Will Smith tagged T-Bones starter Greg Bicknell for a solo home run over the right-centerfield fence. The next two Winnipeg batters reached base with no outs, but Bicknell retired the next three batters in order to end the Goldeyes threat.
Pulled in from the bullpen to replace an injured Eddie Pearson as the T-Bones designated hitter, Jaime Jones did his job in the bottom of the seventh inning, launching his first home run as a T-Bone into the Winnipeg bullpen. The solo shot gave Kansas City a 3-1 lead after seven complete innings.
Winnipeg answered the call with a home run of their own from the bat of Greg Sain, a solo shot that made the game a bit closer at 3-2, but that was all the Fish could muster through the remainder of the game.
T-Bones starter Greg Bicknell (7-10) allowed seven hits and two earned runs in his 7.0 innings of work. The Kansas City veteran walked three and fanned eight Goldeyes in picking up his seventh win of the season. James Morrison pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit or a run for his fourth save of the season.
Game two of a three-game set between the T-Bones and Goldeyes will take place Saturday. Tony Evans (4-1, 3.26) will get the start for the Goldeyes. He will face Kansas Citys Jonathan Krysa (10-3, 3.74) in a 7:05 contest at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
