A solo home run by Dwayne White broke a six-all tie in the top of the eighth inning for the Kansas City T-Bones (9-14) Sunday night as they took the rubber match of a three-game series against the first-place Wichita Wingnuts (15-8), 7-6, in Wichita, KS.
Kansas City jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Justin Murray in the top of the first inning, scoring the first run on an RBI double by Ray Sadler. An RBI single by the next batter, Jonathan Jaspe, capped off the frame.
Reid Santos retired the first six batters he faced for the T-Bones before surrendering a double to Edwin Bellorin to begin the third. An RBI single by Josh Horn later in the inning pulled Wichita within one, 2-1. The Wingnuts took a 3-2 lead in the fifth, first tying the game on an RBI single from Mike Conroy. Conroy eventually scored on a wild pitch for the one-run advantage.
The T-Bones tied the contest at three with an RBI single by Sadler in the sixth. After a perfect bottom half of the frame by Santos, Kansas City scored three times in the top of the seventh to pull ahead, 6-3. The T-Bones loaded the bases on a walk, error and single before an out was collected. Murray then induced a flyout before giving way to Eric Gilliland, who immediately surrendered a triple to Rico Washington to clear the bases.
Murray was charged with six runs, five earned, on nine hits over six and one-thirds innings. Gilliland finished the seventh before Cephas Howard (2-2) entered to begin the eighth for Wichita.
The Wingnuts quickly answered in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at six with three runs on three hits. Conroy drove in the first run with an RBI triple before scoring on a groundout by the next batter, Thomas Fitzgerald. Mike Rocco entered with two outs for Kansas City and was touched for a double by Horn before surrendering an RBI single to Ryan Patterson to tie the game. Steven Stewart (1-0) took over and threw two pitches before Patterson was caught stealing to end the inning.
Santos allowed five runs on nine hits over six and two-thirds innings. Neither starter factored into the decision.
With one out in the eighth, White reclaimed the lead for the T-Bones on the seventh pitch of his at bat against Howard, pushing the score to 7-6 with his second home run of the season. Stewart retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning before Andy Shipman finished the game with a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the year.
