Kansas City jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. Ahron Eggelston led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when the ball was misplayed by Canaries left fielder J.D. Reininger. Eggelston came in to score two batters later on a triple by Neb Brown. Brown scored on a groundout by Brad Correll. After a half inning, the T-Bones were ahead 2-0.
The Canaries cut the lead in half in their first turn to the plate. Joe Anthonsen singled in his first at-bat of the pre-season. Anthonsen advanced to third on a double by J.D. Reininger, and scored as Cory Harris reached on a throwing error by T-Bones third baseman Ryan Fox.
The T-Bones added another run in the third inning. Damian Rolls opened the inning with a single. Rolls came in to score on a wild pitch, putting Kansas City back ahead by a pair of runs, 3-1.
The Birds got the run back in the bottom of the inning. With one on and one out, Beau Torbert, the 2008 American Association Player of the Year, doubled to the wall in left center and put the Canaries within a run, 3-2.
The middle innings belonged to Kansas City. Jeff Helps hit a two-out homer to right field off of Travis Kane in the fourth inning to put Kansas City up, 4-2. An error in the fifth inning opened the door for two unearned runs, and a 6-2 T-Bones lead.
Kansas City scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull ahead 8-2. While the Canaries got two of their own in the bottom of the seventh, and one more on Reininger’s ninth inning home run, the Birds fell three runs short in the 8-5 loss.
