T-Bones add Walters and trade Wiley

ST. PAUL, MN – The Kansas City T-Bones announced that they signed former Major League infielder Zach Walters and have traded infielder Brett Wiley to Fargo for two players to be named later.

Zach Walters, who grew up in Las Vegas and attended the University of San Diego, was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the ninth round in 2010. Walters began his minor league career in 2010 in short season A ball with Yakima in the Northwest League for the Diamondbacks. In 97 games Walters hit .302 with nine homeruns and 56 RBIs. He began 2011 with South Bend in the Midwest League for Arizona but was traded to the Washington Nationals for pitcher Jason Marquis on July 30, 2011. At high A Potomac, he hit .293 in 30 games with 11 RBIs.

Walters then made the steady climb up the Nationals organizational ladder, reaching both AA and AAA in 2012, and he opened 2013 in AAA Syracuse before being called up to the big club later that season. He played in eight games with one RBI. Walters spent most of 2014 at AAA but saw another stint with the Nationals in 2014, playing in 32 games and hitting .205. On July 31, 2014, Walters was traded to Cleveland and saw time at AAA Columbus.  Again, Walters was promoted to the Big Leagues and played in 30 games for the Indians. After designating Walters for assignment on April 3, 2016, the Indians traded him to Los Angeles, where he was assigned to AAA Oklahoma City.

Walters played in 94 games at OKC hitting at a .276 clip and played three games at the Major League level.  The Cincinnati Reds signed Walters to a minor league contract where played in 11 games this season at AAA Louisville, earning a pair of RBIs while hitting .174 before his release.

Brett Wiley, was the lone returning T-Bone on the opening-day roster and was 1-for-15 with an RBI. The Huntington, Indiana native was the 13th round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012. Last season for Kansas City, Wiley hit .305 in 95 games with five homeruns and 45 RBIs.
