For the fourth time in team history, Zack Greinke’s dominant 2009 season brought the Cy Young Award to the Kansas City Royals. Bret Saberhagen won the award in 1985 and 1989, and David Cone took home the honor in 1994. Greinke won his first six starts of the season and finished the campaign with a 16-8 record while posting an MLB-best 2.16 ERA. He set a single-game team record with a 15-strikeout performance versus the Cleveland Indians on August 25.
“On behalf of the T-Bones management, staff, and players, we would like to congratulate Zack on a fine season,” said T-Bones General Manager Chris Browne. “We haven’t seen that kind of performance since Saberhagen and Cone and are excited as baseball fans to have such an honor come back to Kansas City.”
Greinke finished with 25 of 28 first place votes. Seattle Mariners hurler Felix Hernandez garnered two first place votes while Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers earned one. |
