Blackwood Earns Second Weekly Honor of 2010 Campaign

For the second time this season, the Northern League has named Kansas City T-Bones second baseman Jacob Blackwood Player of the Week, this time for the week ending July 25. He was also selected as Northern League Player of the Week for the week ending May 31.

Blackwood, who leads the league with 53 RBI, batted .393 (11-for-28) with seven runs scored, two doubles, a league-high four home runs, and 10 RBI over the seven-game span. The highlight of the week was a two homer, five-RBI, four-for-four performance Friday night versus Rockford in the T-Bones 12-2 victory.

The 6-0, 210-pounder, is playing his fifth season of professional baseball, and second with the T-Bones. He first signed with Kansas City on June 25, 2009 and batted .288 over 63 games for the T-Bones last year. With 16 home runs already in 2010, he has eclipsed his previous single-season home run high of 10, posted with Greensboro of the South Atlantic League in 2007. Blackwood is also on pace to establish a new career high in RBI, besting his current mark of 78, also set during the 2007 campaign. On the verge of a career-year offensively, the 24-year-old has excelled despite changing positions. He has started every game at second base this year after having played over 300 of his previous 373 games at third base entering the season. He had played only six career games at second base at the start of 2010.

Blackwood was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft and played parts of four seasons in their organization. He was also drafted in the 40th round of the 2005 amateur draft by the New York Mets, but did not sign.

This marks the seventh time in nine weeks that a T-Bones player has earned weekly honors.
